Professor Chen is the recipient of the German Humboldt Research Award, the Excellent Teaching Award at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Taiwan Outstanding Scholar Award, the Hou Chin Tui Award, and the Lu Tze Hung Memorial Award of Taiwan. He is a Fellow of ASM International, a Fellow of JSPS, a Fellow of HKIE, and a Fellow of MRS-Taiwan. He has supervised over 50 MS and PhD students and mentored more than 20 research associates and visiting scholars at four universities. Prof. Chen has published over 350 journal articles and delivered more than 250 presentations in addition to countless speeches and remarks in his administrative capacities.

 

Dr. Chen’s disciple research includes metals and alloys, where he pioneered x-ray diffraction studies of kinetic processes of ordering or coarsening of technologically super- alloys. His Involvement and leadership in Higher Education spans more than three decades involving a unique combination of expertise in teaching, research, and academic administration in the US, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Prof Chen is a strong advocate for the integration of liberal arts education in the modern curriculum, emphasizing the importance of soft/professional skills in an era dominated by artificial intelligence. He has written extensively on the development of digital literacy and the necessity of soft/professional skills including effective communication, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and teamwork. Prof. Chen is an advocate for blending technical education with soft/professional, skills necessary to prepares students for a dynamic and unpredictable job market, ensuring their success in professional fields.
